About Us

"...[O]ne in four Americans are in minority groups. By the middle of the century, racial and ethnic minorities are projected to make up a majority of the U.S. population."

- USA Today, Cover Story, 9/5/08

"In March 2005, Statistics Canada projected that people of non-European origin will constitute a majority in both Toronto & Vancouver by 2012."

Just look around. We're everywhere. Some of us are even in the White House.

We're on farms in Mexico, Kentucky and Nepal. We're in offices in New York, Paris and Cairo. We're on the beaches of Samoa, Florida and Zanzibar. And we're even in the rain forests of Brazil, Indonesia and Ecuador.

Our skin comes in every shade: From cocoa to tan to honey to onyx to olive to cinnamon and back again.

Our eyes are shaped like almonds and coconuts and mimic the colors of maple syrup, tanzanite and the deep blue sea.

Our hair is Black, Brown, Blonde, Red, & sometimes even Pink; Short, Long, & In Between as well as Coarse, Curly, Wavy, & Bone straight.

We are every age and speak every language.

No matter where we live, work or play, what we eat, or how we worship and celebrate life, we all share a universal human experience.

We are all One Brown Girl.

But please, don't get it twisted. At the end of the day, it isn't about how brown your skin is or isn't. It's about cultural identity and pride and feeling good about the skin you're in!

Mission & Vision

OneBrownGirl.com's (OBG) mission is to celebrate culture, diversity and strong self image amongst Brown Girls across the globe. Our hope and heartfelt intention is to - in some small way - inspire Brown Girls everywhere to greatness by creating a well-known and respected brand that is adopted globally and consistently speaks to the mission.

The OBG mission will be implemented in the following ways:

By creating high quality products that boast unique and positive images and messages.

By relaying stories - whether fictional or non-fictional; on the OBG site, in books, on the small screen and in motion pictures - that celebrate the differences in our respective [Brown Girl] cultures, but that emphasize the similarities, of which there are many.

By producing adventures, events and contests that teach, empower, motivate and are just plain fun!

OBG's ultimate goal is to educate, uplift and enlighten everyone around the world. OBG's vision is a world where culture is embraced; where cultural differences are openly explored; and where cultural similarities are applauded. A world where women and girls of color - regardless of culture, ethnicity or race - feel good about themselves, have healthy self esteem, and are genuinely comfortable with the skin they're in.

To sum it all up, we love everyone.

Clearly, our point of view is from a global perspective and we acknowledge (with disdain) that in many cultures being Brown hasn't been historically celebrated. But OBG says phooey.

Be proud to be Brainy.and Gutsy.and Artsy.and Blessed. In fact, wear it on your chest.

One Brown GirlWhether you are Aborigine, African, American, Caribbean, Central American, Indian, Filipina, Latina, Moroccan, Native American, Polynesian, South American, or some other fabulous Brown Girl of any descent - please - get in on the global phenomenon:

Celebrate Yourself.

Sincerely,
One Brown Girl
